Is GarageBand actually free?
Yes. GarageBand comes preinstalled on every new Mac, and if you don't have it, it's a free download from the Mac App Store. There's no subscription and no in-app purchases — every instrument, loop, and effect included with the app is free to use.
Do I need an audio interface or MIDI keyboard?
No, not to get started. You can record audio through your Mac's built-in microphone and play software instruments with your computer keyboard using GarageBand's 'Musical Typing' feature. An audio interface and a MIDI keyboard both make recording easier and higher quality, but they're upgrades, not requirements.
What's the difference between GarageBand and Logic Pro?
Logic Pro is Apple's professional DAW, and it's built on the same foundation as GarageBand — the layout, the shortcuts, and the core workflow will feel familiar if you learn one first. Logic adds more advanced mixing tools, more instruments and effects, support for third-party plugins, and more detailed automation. A GarageBand project opens directly in Logic Pro if you ever upgrade, so nothing you build is wasted.

Absolutely. GarageBand includes a dedicated podcast/voice workflow with ducking (automatically lowering music when someone speaks), speech enhancement, and easy multi-track editing. The recording and editing lessons in the Beginner and Intermediate tracks apply directly to spoken-word projects.
Do I need to know music theory to use GarageBand?
No. GarageBand's Smart Controls, Drummer, and loop library are designed so you can make a finished song by ear. That said, a little theory — scales, chords, and song structure — makes everything faster, and the Advanced track touches on the theory tools built into GarageBand.
Why can't I find a certain plugin or effect mentioned elsewhere?
GarageBand doesn't support third-party plugins (VST or Audio Unit) the way Logic Pro does — everything you use is built into the app. This site only covers GarageBand's stock instruments and effects, so every lesson works with what you already have installed.
My project sounds different on other speakers or headphones. Why?
This is normal, and every producer deals with it. Mixes can sound bright on one system and muddy on another. The Advanced track covers reference-checking your mix on multiple devices and basic mastering, which helps a track translate better across speakers.
How do I get my finished song out of GarageBand?
Use Share → Export Song to Disk (or File → Export in newer versions) to bounce your project to an audio file like a WAV or MP3. Lesson 10 in the Beginner track walks through this step by step, including which format to pick for different uses.
